Cher/Christina Aguilera Movie Burlesque Gets Live Stage Parody -- Before It Even Opens! BOYLESQUE Limited Engagement Begins November 19
The people who brought you such fine theatrical fare as Sock Puppet Showgirls, Facts of Life: The Lost Episode, The Golden Girls musical Thank You For Being A Friend, and Whatever Happened to Busty Jane? proudly present the World Premiere of BOYLESQUE. This unauthorized parody of the Cher/Christina Aguilera film Burlesque marks the first time in history that a parody has opened before its original source material. Written and directed by Zack Carey, performances begin November 19 at The Laurie Beechman Theater.
BOYLESQUE is the story of Chris, a gay boy from rural Ohio. Fed up with life in a small town, he heads to the big city of Akron to seek his fame and fortune. He ends up at The Boylesque Lounge, a seedy gay club run by the world's worst Cher impersonator. Chris' life takes a dramatic turn as he is quickly seduced by this previously unfathomable world of bitchy drag queens, hot bartenders and sleazy go-go boys. But just as his passion to become a performer begins to blossom, the
future of Boylesque is threatened by a wealthy businessman's quest to buy the club and turn it into condos. Can Chris help Cher turn back time and save Boylesque?
The production stars Mimi Imfurst (The Diary of Anne Frankenstein, Facts of Life: The Lost Episode), Kitty Hiccups, Blackie O., Jake Lemmenes (Twist, Thank You For Being A Friend), Matthew Brown (3boys at FringeNYC), Alex Engquist (3boys at FringeNYC), and a special guest
star nightly.
According to writer/director Zack Carey, "You don't need to look any further than the trailer for Burlesque to know that it is ripe for parody. So why even wait for the film to come out? Doing a parody in advance poses some unique challenges. And how do you satire something
that is already pretty much a spoof? Moving the action to a gay club almost feels redundant. But it also frees us to tell the ‘small-town kid pursues fame' story while paying homage to films such as Fame, Flashdance, Showgirls, Glitter, and Valley of the Dolls."
BOYLESQUE runs November 19 - December 17, Fridays at 10pm at the Laurie Beechman Theatre (inside West Bank Cafe at 407 West 42nd Street -- at Ninth Avenue, accessible from the A,C,E,N,R,V,F,1,2,3 trains at 42nd Street). Tickets are $18 in advance / $20 at the door with a $15
food/drink minimum per person, available at www.SpinCycleNYC.com or by calling 212-352-3101.
