[NEWS] 'THE VOICE': THE #1 TV SHOW IN FEBRUARY

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – March 1, 2012 – Paced by the combination of NBC Sports’ February 5 coverage of the Super Bowl and primetime’s #1 series for the month, “The Voice,” NBC has won the February 2012 Nielsen Sweep in the key demographic of adults 18-49 and ranks #1 or tied for #1 in all other key demographics.

The hit Monday singing competition “The Voice” finished as the #1 series for the February sweep in adults, men and women 18-34; adults, men (tie) and women 18-49; adults and women 25-54; kids 2-11 and teens 12-17, led by results for its February 5 season premiere following the Super Bowl. In adults 18-49, “The Voice” averaged a 7.5rating for the month and in total viewers, “The Voice” delivered 19.4 million persons.

With all 28 nights of the February 2-29 period now measured, “most current” averages in adults 18-49 for the month are: NBC (a 3.7 rating), CBS (3.0), Fox (3.0), ABC (2.5) and CW (0.7). In total viewers, “most current” sweep averages are CBS (12.2 million), NBC (10.4 million), Fox (8.5 million), ABC (7.8 million) and CW (1.6 million).

With this year’s boosts from the Super Bowl and “The Voice,” NBC is up versus the year-ago February sweep by 131 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 3.7 from a 1.6) and up 86 percent in total viewers (10.4 million vs. 5.6 million). According to “most current” results for the sweep, NBC is #1 or tied for #1 in all key demographics – adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54.

The combination of “The Voice” and the critically acclaimed new drama “Smash” (3.1 rating in 18-49, 8.9 viewers overall) helped NBC triple its Monday 18-49 average rating from the year-ago February 2011 sweep (with a 5.2 vs. a 1.7).

February sweep figures are “most current” averages of “live plus seven day” data except for the two most recent weeks, which are “live plus same day.”

[NEWS] TCA: WHY 'THE VOICE' ISN'T 'X FACTOR' OR 'AMERICAN IDOL'

The executive producer and stars (or coaches) of NBC’s The Voice had no problem distinguishing their show from the glut of singing competition shows dotting the television landscape.

The show usually makes a big deal about its blind auditions, the item that makes them the most obviously different from other competitions and Friday's TCA session was no different. But, they also touched on something that makes them especially different: The fact that they don't even air the bad auditions.

"The idea of finding people who couldn’t sing and making a mockery of someone" isn't the show's style, executive producer Mark Burnett says and the show's stars firmly back him up on that.

“We all told them we’re not signing up for this show if it’s about ridiculing someone or mocking talent,” said Christina Aguilera, in a thinly veiled swipe at Fox’s American Idol and X Factor.

“Essentially this show is about artist development,” added Cee Lo Green.

And Adam Levine explains that the talent level definitely makes the critiques different, as well. There's a difference between being critical and just willfully mean. The talent level, especially this year is pretty high that you can be honest and say, 'This isn’t your best' rather than they suck."

At the same time, Burnett knows that fans have been trained by its competition to expect the conflict that bad talent and judges' comments bring to a show such as this one. He says that's replaced on The Voice with the idea of superstar judges begging unknowns to join their teams and competing against each other throughout the competition.

The Voice has become a bright spot for basement-dwelling NBC. And the network will bow the second season of the show Feb. 5 after NBC’s telecast of the Super Bowl, giving The Voice a monster lead-in that will expose the show to millions of potential new fans and likely juice the show’s season tune-in average for the entire season.

Still, executive producer Mark Burnett declined to speculate on the show’s sophomore season ratings predictions. “I’ve had shows that have done phenomenally well and shows that haven’t done well. I’m not that good at predictions.”

Asked if he learned anything from Simon Cowell’s overblown ratings forecast for the premiere of The X Factor, Burnett bluntly replied: “I’m hoping the lesson learned there is say less about your big predictions. I’m not that good at predictions.”

[VIDEO] 'THE VOICE' SEASON 2: TEASER PROMO 1

In just about three months, NBC’s hit reality singing competition, The Voice, will return for its second season. Besides a few set photos, little has been seen of the new season. Until tonight that is.

The very first teaser promo of the show’s second season aired on television today (during Saturday Night Live with Maroon 5 as the musical guest to be exact). The clip features coaches Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green and Blake Shelton along with a string of contestants performing during the super tough blind auditions.

“I’m looking for the best voice in America,”Cee-Lo says as he opens the clip. “What does this voice look like?,” Christina asks as we get our first peek at a blind auditioner singing in the background.

The Voice’s first episode of season two will premiere on February 5, 2012 after the Super Bowl. Get excited and watch the promo video below:

At the press junket, the reality show’s creator Mark Burnett confirmed that each coach will mentor twelve contestants instead of last year’s eight - meaning more rounds of blind auditions, according to THR.

FYI: Christina is wearing a Dolce & Gabbana skirt, L’Agence blouse, a Barbara Bui belt, Loree Rodkin jewels, a custom knuckle duster by Stephen Webster, and Alexandre Birman boots.

[NEWS] CHRISTINA AGUILERA AND 'THE VOICE': 'SHE'S NOT GOING ANYWHERE'

Rumors have been circulating throughout the interweb stating that our very own Queen of Pop, Christina Aguilera, was getting the boot from the hit show 'The Voice'. When executive producer Mark Burnett heard the rumors he went straight to E! to clear things up. This is what he said:

"You're the first person I've spoken to about this"

"Christina is absolutely staying. She is not going anywhere, 100 percent. We were emailing with Christina yesterday. They're all back."
Burnett hinted at how he thinks the rumor got started.

"It's ridiculous. You know what it is? Nervous other shows. So you know what I say [to that]? 'Good try.' "
NBC has also shot down the speculation, while Aguilera's rep assured E! News when the report first surfaced that it was "absolutely false."

The new season of The Voice with Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and host Carson Daly premieres on Feb. 5 after NBC's coverage of Super Bowl XLVI.

In fact, Cee Lo told me earlier this summer he knew of no plans to change the lineup.

"It's not broke so why try to fix it?" he said. "Everybody's on board and
everybody's enthusiastic about doing a second season."
And that's music to our ears.

[NEWS] THR: THE REAL STORY BEHIND NBC'S 'SMASH' 'THE VOICE'

In The Hollywood Reporter cover story, the executives, producers and talent behind the pricey singing competition -- costing $2.3 million per hour -- reveal why they were confident in the show, their shock at the initial ratings and what's in store.

For the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter, out in Los Angeles and New York on Thursday, Kim Masters and Lacey Rose sat down with the executives, producers and talent who turned The Voice into fourth-place NBC's biggest hit in five years.

THE IDEA WAS BORN OUT OF SIMON COWELL'S IDOL EXIT

The idea for a singing competition on NBC started a year ago, when Simon Cowell was preparing to exit Fox's American Idol. NBC head of alternative programming Paul Telegdy didn't know about The Voice format yet but thought there might be an opportunity for a show that felt "like an arena experience for a music fan." So they turned to reality guru Mark Burnett, who was working with NBC at the time on Celebrity Apprentice and had done Rock Star, which lasted only two seasons at CBS; he wanted to take another swing at the music world. "He said, 'I feel like I have unfinished business -- I really want to crack this space,' " Telegdy says.

JEFF GASPIN PUSHED NBC TO FIND A HOOK

The concept wasn't crystallized, but it would involve three to four star judges from different genres who would mentor unknown singers. Telegdy and his team began crafting a wish list that included Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. By August 2010, they already were hunting for contestants, but when the idea was pitched the idea to Jeff Gaspin, then-chairman of NBCU Television Entertainment, they hit a wall. What's differentiating about this show, he asked? Soon, Telegdy heard about The Voice of Holland. It came from John de Mol, who had launched international hit formats Big Brother and Deal or No Deal. The hook was the blind auditions, where the "coaches" only hear -- not see -- the contestants. "Mark and I looked at each other and said, 'Oh my God, how could we be so stupid not to think of this ourselves?,' " says Telegdy. "John will hate seeing this in print, but I did think to myself, 'There's a reason John de Mol has a plane and a billion dollars."

CHRISTINA AGUILERA IS PAID MORE THAN $225,000 AN EPISODE

The Voice format was also being shopped to CBS, which would balk at the high production and acquisition costs. Telegdy did not: "I was willing to pay a premium." In those early days, the cost per hour was $1.5 million. By the time it jelled, the number was at $2.3 million, more than the network would pay to license a first-year hourlong (about $2 million). Knowledgeable sources say celebrity coach Aguilera is pulling down more than $225,000 per hour; the other coaches -- Levine, Shelton and Green -- are getting about $75,000 each. The story reveals how the execs wanted talent who could actually perform and had current musical credibility.

NBC CONSIDERED APPROACHING JOHN MAYER AS A COACH

The first person locked for the show was Carson Daly, formerly of MTV's Total Request Live and now host of NBC's Last Call With Carson Daly. “I’ve been the caboose -- a pretty no-frills caboose, mind you -- for this network for 11 seasons,” Daly says. Meanwhile, the four celebrity coaches all say they were lured by the show's positive message and mentoring aspect. “It’s not showcasing people who suck and making a mockery of anybody,” Shelton says. “It’s just about good singers who all get that it’s a competition show.” John Mayer was considered in the process, sources confirm.

BOB GREENBLATT SENT JIMMY KIMMEL CHAMPAGNE AFTER HE MOCKED NBC

During NBC's upfront presentation in May, Greenblatt told the crow the show as "a rare gift from God." At the ABC presentation the next day, Jimmy Kimmel stood up and said, "God has nothing to do with what's going on at NBC. God stopped watching NBC after Friends." Greenblatt sent a note to Kimmel and a bottle of champagne: "Dear Jimmy, You're a gift from God, too. Don't let anyone tell you differently. Cheers."

WHAT WILL CHANGE IN SEASON TWO

All four coaches are expected to be back for the second season, and de Mol says he envisions five to six audition episodes (up from only two this year). Telegdy is eager to build the backstories of the contestants and depict more of the coaching process in longer "battle round" episodes. And if all continues to go well, NBC hopes to have two installments of Voice -- one in the fall and one in the spring -- for the 2012-13 season. NBC also is looking at other ways of exploiting the show's success -- possibly a tour with some, if not all, of the coaches and an album featuring songs like their Queen medley.
