[NEWS] MTV WEIGHS IN THEIR LIST OF PROS AND CONS TO BRITNEY SPEARS JOINING 'X FACTOR' AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR CHRISTINA AND 'THE VOICE'

The news that Britney Spears is reportedly in final negotiations to join "The X Factor" has set the MTV Newsroom on fire. Opinion on whether the pop star is a good fit for the reality singing competition has been sharply divided, so we decided to take on the topic the way we're sure Simon Cowell did before making Spears a reported $10 million offer: a good, old-fashioned pros and cons list.

Pro: She'll attract viewers

The debut season of "The X Factor" performed well below expectations. Its heavily hyped premiere pulled in 12.1 million total viewers and a meager 4.4/12 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49 demographic. That's about half of what the 2011 season of "American Idol" averaged ("Idol" is having its own ratings woes this season), and it didn't even win the night: Emmy-winning sitcom "Modern Family" drew 14.3 million viewers and a 6.0/15 for its season premiere.

The poor ratings precipitated the overhaul that saw judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones fired from the show.

There's no question that Spears would bring viewers to "The X Factor." She enjoys a large and devout fanbase who will basically follow her just about anywhere. And beyond her own fans, Spears' celebrity would also likely draw attention from the general public, who will tune in simply to see how she does.

Con: She's become nervous on camera

Though she can still wow a crowd live in concert, as evidenced by last year's successful tour behind her hit album, Femme Fatale, Spears has become increasingly tentative during interviews. She rarely grants on-camera sit-downs, and when she does, she seems nervous and uncomfortable.

To be a strong judge or mentor on a reality show, you have to be very comfortable on camera. Part of what made Jennifer Lopez click last season on "Idol" was the she came across as confident, direct and often empathetic. She even broke down in tears after sending home contestant Chris Medina, whose fiancé suffered a severe brain injury in a car accident. The key word here is after. It's hard to imagine Spears being able to keep it together and deliver such difficult news in similar circumstances. It's worth noting that a high-drama situation arose on the first season of "The X Factor" -- one that left contestant Rachel Crowe sobbing onstage and Scherzinger a wreck ... a wreck who received death threats. Producers should also consider whether it's wise to send Spears, who has dealt with emotional issues in the past, into a genre that thrives when the emotional stakes are high.

Pro: she is a contemporary artist

One of the things we like most about "The Voice" is that its judges — Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton — are all active artists. They are all still hitting the studio to make hit records, and that lends a great deal of credibility to their opinions when they critique a contestant's performance. We don't mean to slight Abdul or Scherzinger, but you could argue that a legacy singer who hasn't released an album in over 17 years and a performer who has had a difficult time getting her own solo singing career off the ground aren't the best judges of who does and does not have "The X Factor."

On the other hand, Spears may be. Last year's Femme Fatale gave Spears three top-10 singles — the most of any of her seven albums — and earned some of the best reviews of her career. While it's true that she did not write or produce much of the record, she was most certainly involved in picking her collaborators, which actually could speak well of her ability to know talent when she sees it. Spears also smartly chose red-hot rapper Nicki Minaj to open on the North American leg of her tour.

When it comes to the contemporary pop music scene, Spears knows what works.

Con: She's not known for her singing

Unlike Aguilera, whose talent as a vocalist is indisputable, Spears is not known for her singing. By signing her to judge and mentor a singing competition, "X Factor" producers are setting themselves up for inevitable criticism. "Who is Britney Spears to judge a singing competition?" critics will scream (and they won't be wrong).

When Aguilera critiques a performer's vocals, she speaks with authority — and her ear for singing proved to make her the most discerning judge on the "Voice" panel during the blind auditions. Spears' judging style will likely be based on liking what's already there, but she's not going to have much insight on missed notes or pitch, which will cripple her ability to further mentor her team. How can she help them improve as vocalists when it's a truth universally acknowledged that she's not really a vocalist herself?

[NEWS] 'THE VOICE' SINGS LOUDER THAN 'AMERICAN IDOL' IN THE RATINGS

Barring a surprise with Thursday's American Idol, this week's telecast of The Voice will rate higher with adults 18-49 and total viewers than American Idol. Monday's two-hour installment of The Voice drew a 6.0 adults 18-49 rating and and a smidgen over 16 million viewers. Last night's two-hour American Idol scored a 5.1 rating with adults 18-49 and 15.88 million viewers in the preliminary ratings. It's likely Idol will be adjusted up a tenth or two in the final numbers, but there's no chance it will overtake The Voice this week with adults 18-49 (though there's a good shot it will work its way into a virtual tie).

So now 'The Voice > Idol" meme ensues, and I'd guess in one fashion or the other we'll see those comparisons for a while regardless of what happens. Some have asked me if I am surprised by American Idol's ratings. I tend to ignore the intra-week machinations but barring a turnaround it does appear that American Idol will be down for the season than the typical ~10%-15% annual year over year declines that always have happened. That's a little surprising since This has led some to opine that there is singing show saturation where adding The X Factor and having both hurts both Idol and The X Factor. That's perhaps a reasonable thing to speculate, but it's impossible to quantify. To be a contrarian I'd have to ask "if there is singing show saturation, why is The Voice doing better than The X Factor, and at least this week, even better than Idol? The easiest explanation to me is that for whatever reason, people just like The Voice more than The X Factor and at least this week more than American Idol (at least in live and same night DVR viewing).

But I'm much more surprised that The X Factor didn't perform better than I am by Idol being down. With a major overhaul underway, it will be interested to see what happens with The X Factor next season.

But what surprises me the most is the interest in ratings for The Voice. It's rare that we ever got much interest in Idol's ratings (Simon leaving did generate more interest in Idol's post-Simon ratings last season though). There's almost never much interest in unscripted show ratings, so that wasn't a surprise. But there is interest in The Voice's ratings and that's backed up by both qualitative data in the comments, and quantitative data in our site stats. I'm not sure if it's just a case where we were already around when The Voice launched where is Idol was on for years before we launched, or bewilderment that something besides the NFL is performing so well on NBC.

For and against, people are interested in The Voice. There seems to be the perfect storm where there are an equal number of anti-fans who will proclaim "See, I knew it. The Voice is doomed!' if it drops to a 5.5 adults 18-49 rating next week.

[NEWS] ALL FOUR COACHES ARE RETURNING FOR THIS FALL'S SEASON 3 OF 'THE VOICE'

All four "Voice" judges will return to the NBC hit for a third season that will air -- for the first time -- in the fall, TheWrap has learned.

TheWrap reported previously that Christina Aguilera had agreed to return for $10 million for the season.

Now, Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton have all agreed to return as well, all with substantial pay raises, according to two individuals close to the negotiations. They have arranged their schedules for a fall debut, which NBC is preparing to announce shortly.

The individuals said that Green, Levine and Shelton will see their pay roughly doubled to $6 million.

A spokeswoman for NBC said that the judges were not settled upon yet. "No final decisions have been made," she told TheWrap.

Representatives for the judges declined to comment or did not immediately return calls for comment Thursday.

But insiders told TheWrap that Levine of "Maroon 5" had been holding out because of the scheduling issue. He and his band have an album nearing completion, and tour dates and promotion of the album had to move to accommodate the show's move to the fall.

"The Voice" was a breakout midseason hit for NBC when it debuted in April 2011. This season, the show -- which has aired three episodes -- has the highest averaging ratings on television. It averages an 8.4 rating/21 share in the crucial 18-49 demographic and 21.3 million viewers overall. It owes that average largely to huge ratings for the premiere, which aired in the plum spot after the Super Bowl.

TheWrap previously reported that NBC was considering moving the show to the fall. Now, with the agreement to bring back the four-judge panel, that decision has been made, according to knowledgeable individuals.

The network is expected to announce the decision in the next two weeks.

That scheduling decision would have the show, now a midseason hit, airing at the same time of year as Fox's "X Factor."

[NEWS] CHRISTINA AGUILERA WILL BE RETURNING FOR THE 3RD SEASON OF 'THE VOICE'

"The Voice" has signed Christina Aguilera for a third season as NBC considers launching that season in the fall instead of waiting until 2013, TheWrap has learned.

That scheduling decision would have the show, now a midseason hit, airing at the same time of year as Fox's "X Factor."

Aguilera is the first of the four "Voice" judges to re-up her contract, which TheWrap last week reported amounted to a pricey $10 million, far more than "X Factor" judges earn on Fox.

But one insider close to the show said Aguilera's contract was for under $10 million.

Aguilera has been signed to tape the shows from September through December, according to a person close to the negotiations.

An NBC spokesman said no decision has been made about whether the show would air in the fall. But NBC insiders said the network was "considering" airing "The Voice" then.

One insider said NBC hopes to bring back the entire judges' panel -- Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton.

"We're really pleased with the entire cast," the person said. "You look at [the] ratings and it's no accident."

The show was a breakout hit for NBC in April when it hurried it to air and got the jump on the debut of Fox's fall singing show, "X Factor." NBC considered airing the current, second season of "The Voice" at the start of the 2011-12 season, but decided the turnaround time would be too fast.

"The Voice" has become NBC's highest-rated show besides NFL broadcasts.

In its season two premiere Sunday, following the Super Bowl, it earned NBC's strongest ratings for an entertainment show in six years. Monday's episode earned the network's best ratings in its timeslot in nearly eight years, excluding the Olympics.

In its first season,"X Factor" scored a 4.3 rating/12 share in the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic and averaged 12.6 million total viewers, compared to an 8.5/23 and 25.2 million for "Idol" last year.

After just two episodes, "The Voice" actually has higher average ratings than "Idol" this season -- but its ratings are severely skewed by its post-Super Bowl premiere. Monday's episode of "The Voice" scored a 6.6 rating in the demo and 17.7 million viewers; Sunday's scored a 16.3 rating and 36.7 million.

[NEWS] CHRISTINA AGUILERA REPORTEDLY MAKES AN UPWARDS OF $10 MILLION FOR 'THE VOICE'

Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and Steve Jones were all fired from "The X Factor" on Monday, according to individuals close to the show.

Fox and producers Fremantle and Simon Cowell were looking to make a clean sweep, according to those individuals, and are looking for new talent to replace the two judges and the host.

Said one of those individuals: "They survived this year, but it didn’t really work. So they’ve figured they have an opportunity to fix it.

"They expected Paula to be the goofy girl, and Nicole to be the pretty one. But Paula was so bad that it made none of it work."

A Fox spokesman confirmed the departures of Scherzinger and Jones, but could not immediately confirm Abdul's departure.

Part of the issue, the insider said, was that Fox chose to spend its money on an elaborate set and glitzy production values for the live show. By contrast, NBC's "The Voice" spent its budget on hiring top-shelf talent, including Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton.

Aguilera is said to be receiving upwards of $10 million per season for "The Voice." One insider told TheWrap that Abdul was receiving only $1 million for a season of "The X Factor."

Jones confirmed his exit on Twitter.

Scherzinger, the lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, replaced original "X Factor" judge Cheryl Cole, who was dismissed from the show in May 2011.

The show has scored admirable ratings, but hasn't lived up to creator Cowell's expectations. He said last summer he hoped it would top "American Idol" as the country's top-rated show, but it failed to climb from the roughly 12.49 million viewers who watched its September launch. Indeed, "X Factor" earned only half of his former show's ratings in its first season, which wrapped in December.

The show stirred buzz for certain episodes -- most notably the Dec. 8 live results show when teen contender Rachel Crow unexpectedly got the boot -- but "X Factor" viewership fell to as few as 8.51 million.

Scherzinger was knocked for indecisiveness, especially when she refused to make a crucial ruling on which of two contenders should go home. Abdul was largely a peacemaker this go-round, and had few of the sparks she displayed with Cowell on "American Idol." Instead, Cowell feuded with new judge L.A. Reid.

"X Factor" has averaged a 4.2/12 rating among Adults 18-49 and 12.4 million total viewers last season, close to the ratings of NBC's new singing competition, "The Voice."

"The Voice" returns to the airwaves on Feb. 6. "X Factor" hopes to have replacement talent locked in by April, according to the insider.

Editor's Note:
Christina Aguilera actually makes more money per episode than her Pop music peer, Jennifer Lopez. Lopez reportedly makes $20 million dollars per season of American Idol, which spans about 39 episodes. Aguilera's 'upwards of $10 million dollars' for The Voice spanned 17 episodes for season one. Mathematically speaking, $20 million dollars divided by 39 episodes of American Idol puts Lopez at $512,820 thousand dollars per episode. $10 million dollars divided by 17 episodes of The Voice puts Aguilera at $588,235 thousand dollars per episode. Let's pretend The Voice wants to extend it's season by doubling the amount of episodes from season one. 17 plus 17 equals 34 episodes which is 5 short of Idol's 39 episodes. What does this mean? Idol is trying too hard. Relevant much? Flop, what? #StayPressedHaters

[NEWS] TCA: WHY 'THE VOICE' ISN'T 'X FACTOR' OR 'AMERICAN IDOL'

The executive producer and stars (or coaches) of NBC’s The Voice had no problem distinguishing their show from the glut of singing competition shows dotting the television landscape.

The show usually makes a big deal about its blind auditions, the item that makes them the most obviously different from other competitions and Friday's TCA session was no different. But, they also touched on something that makes them especially different: The fact that they don't even air the bad auditions.

"The idea of finding people who couldn’t sing and making a mockery of someone" isn't the show's style, executive producer Mark Burnett says and the show's stars firmly back him up on that.

“We all told them we’re not signing up for this show if it’s about ridiculing someone or mocking talent,” said Christina Aguilera, in a thinly veiled swipe at Fox’s American Idol and X Factor.

“Essentially this show is about artist development,” added Cee Lo Green.

And Adam Levine explains that the talent level definitely makes the critiques different, as well. There's a difference between being critical and just willfully mean. The talent level, especially this year is pretty high that you can be honest and say, 'This isn’t your best' rather than they suck."

At the same time, Burnett knows that fans have been trained by its competition to expect the conflict that bad talent and judges' comments bring to a show such as this one. He says that's replaced on The Voice with the idea of superstar judges begging unknowns to join their teams and competing against each other throughout the competition.

The Voice has become a bright spot for basement-dwelling NBC. And the network will bow the second season of the show Feb. 5 after NBC’s telecast of the Super Bowl, giving The Voice a monster lead-in that will expose the show to millions of potential new fans and likely juice the show’s season tune-in average for the entire season.

Still, executive producer Mark Burnett declined to speculate on the show’s sophomore season ratings predictions. “I’ve had shows that have done phenomenally well and shows that haven’t done well. I’m not that good at predictions.”

Asked if he learned anything from Simon Cowell’s overblown ratings forecast for the premiere of The X Factor, Burnett bluntly replied: “I’m hoping the lesson learned there is say less about your big predictions. I’m not that good at predictions.”

[NEWS] FOX'S 'X FACTOR' FAILS TO FIRE UP THE KEY DEMOGRAPHIC FALLING BELOW 'THE VOICE'

Primetime's latest singing competition series, Fox's "The X-Factor," bowed to solid but unspectacular numbers Wednesday, a night that saw ABC close strong with series highs for "Modern Family" - the night's No. 1 show in demos - and a good start for drama "Revenge."

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, the Simon Cowell-fronted "X-Factor" opened with a two-hour episode that averaged a 4.2 rating/12 share in adults 18-49 and 12.1 million viewers overall - below the 5.1 demo score that NBC's "The Voice" notched with its premiere in late April, and less than one-half the 9.8 that Fox's "American Idol" opened with in mid-January. While very good fall premiere numbers for any other new show, expectations industry wide were that "X-Factor" would come out of the gate quite a bit stronger.

[NEWS] CHRISTINA'S RAUNCY X FACTOR NUMBER FORCES SIMON COWELL TO TONE DOWN THE SHOW

[SMART-PHONE FRIENDLY]

X Factor boss Simon Cowell said the show will be toned "down a bit" after last year's finale sparked thousands of complaints.

Pre-watershed scenes featuring Christina Aguilera and her backing dancers in a racy routine saw 2868 complaints made to media regulator Ofcom.

The singer donned a short black dress while her female dancers, who were bent over chairs, wore suspenders, bra tops, fishnet stockings and basques in the raunchy routine.

Cowell said he had listened to public opinion, adding: "I think based on the reaction we'd have to tone it down a bit."

He said he was pleased with the new judging panel on the show and described Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland as "genius" and said for it to continue being a success "you can't keep doing things the same year after year after year".

Cowell said he does not think he has "fallen out" with Cheryl Cole but admitted he had only had a couple of texts from her since she was dropped as a judge on the US version of The X Factor.

He said viewers will see her in the first episode which was recorded before she left the series when she was replaced with former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger only three weeks after starting the job.

Cowell said: "I thought she would work better in England, nothing more than that, you will see her in the first episode but she doesn't look as comfortable on the American show as she does in the English show."

He said he offered her a role on the UK version of the show and a return to the US version but she turned both down, having also turned down an earlier opportunity to appear on the panel of Britain's Got Talent.

"She was offered BGT before X Factor and she basically had cold feet. She said yes and with two days to go she said this isn't for me," he said.

Cowell, who said he had been "incredibly close" to the Girls Aloud star at one time, added: "I don't think we've fallen out, at least I don't think so."

[NEWS] CHRISTINA AGUILERA COULD SCORE A SURPRISE TOP-TEN RE-ENTRY

Cheryl Cole is almost certain to hit number one this Sunday and smash records for the fastest selling single of 2009 with Fight For This Love.

Sales figures after one day show the song is selling three times as many copies as its nearest rival- Alexandra Burke’s Bad Boys.

Cheryl’s performance on the X Factor this Sunday will certainly have helped sales with over 12 million people tuning into the ITV show.

Ironically Cole was Alexandra’s mentor on the talent show and they are apparently close friends.

The extent of X Factor’s influence on the charts is seen elsewhere in the Top 10. Whitney Houston looks likely to hit Top 5 despite mixed reviews for her own performance on the programme.

Christina Aguilera could also score a surprise top 10 re-entry with Hurt- after the track was sung by contestant Jamie Archer.
